Eco-Instagram Projects with Hwa Chong and Temasek Poly Students (Feb to Jul 21)

In Feb 2021, Project Reverie, a student group from Hwa Chong Institution (College) wrote to Earth Society to express interest to work with Earth Society on a project in their Service Learning module. The student group was interested to create an Eco-Instagram Page to raise awareness about Climate change through the use of social media.

We corresponded with the students from Feb to Jun 2021 on their project. The students created an Instagram page to spread awareness about climate change.

They also put up posters in the school canteen to encourage reduction in meat consumption to protect the environment.

At the end of the project, Bernice Ng, Team leader of Project Reverie wrote:

On May 2021, Ecowarriorss, a student group from Temasek Polytechnic wrote to Earth Society to work on a project in their Global Citizenship and Community Development (GCCD) module. The student group was interested to create an Instagram Page to spread information on Climate change. This is the 3^rd time Temasek Polytechnic student groups write to invite us to participate in their projects.

Earth Society collaborated with Ecowarriorss via Zoom and email from May to Jul 2021. The students created an Instagram page to promote Meatless Days.

The Instagram Page has News Report, youtube videos and Team members view on Meatless days etc. 

Ecowarriorss team wrote:

“As a team, we feel that Meatless days are a great initiative as it benefits not only our health but also the environment and wildlife too! We really hope that this Instagram account helped to educate our followers on eating lesser meat. This will bring about a positive change and thus save our planet together.” 

We are glad that students from different Institutes are taking on Eco-friendly projects to spread info on protecting the environment. We hope more students will join in the environmental movement to protect the Earth and create a sustainable future for everyone on the planet.

Online GW talk @ Yuan Ching Secondary (Aug)

Mr Chen Zhanjiang from Yuan Ching Secondary invited Earth Society to conduct an online Global Warming talk for the Sec 3 to Sec 5 students on 18 Aug. This is the 2^nd time Yuan Ching Secondary write to us to conduct a talk for their students. The last time they invited us was in 2019.

On 18 Aug, Earth Society joined Mr Chen Janjiang (via Zoom) at 2 pm. We conducted a Global Warming talk for about 350 students from 2.15 pm to 3.15 pm. We presented on the effects of Climate change on the world and showcased various solutions that scientists recommended to curb climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs). We also touched on the issue of deforestation and world hunger. Teachers and students listened attentively to the talk.

Online GW talk @ Jebsen and Jessen (Aug)

Mr Jai Mehta, Sales Manager in Jebsen and Jessen Singapore Pte Ltd, invited Earth Society to conduct an online Global Warming talk for their staffs on 13 Aug.

On 13 Aug, Earth Society joined Mr Jai Mehta (via MS Teams) at 1.45 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk for about 50 staffs from 2 pm to 3 pm. We presented on the effects of Climate change on the world and showcased various solutions that scientists recommended to curb climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs). We also touched on the issue of deforestation and world hunger. Jebsen and Jessen staffs listened attentively to the talk.

Online GW talk @ Engie Services and Logicalis Singapore (Jul)

Mr Justin Teo, an EHS officer in Engie Services Singapore, invited Earth Society to conduct an online Global Warming talk for their staffs on 26 Jul.

On 26 Jul, Earth Society joined Mr Justin Teo (via MS Teams) at 11.45 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk for about 50 staffs from 12 pm to 1 pm. We presented on the effects of Climate change on the world and showcased various solutions that scientists recommended to curb climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs). We also touched on the issue of deforestation and world hunger. Eugie Service Singapore staffs listened attentively to the talk.

Ms Gerald Choy, a HR intern in Logicalis Singapore, invited Earth Society to conduct an online Global Warming talk for their staffs on 29 Jul.

On 29 Jul, Earth Society joined Ms Gerald Choy (via Webex) at 4.45 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk for about 30 staffs from 5 pm to 6 pm. Logicalis Singapore staffs listened attentively to the talk.

Online GW talk @ Top International Holdings (Jun)

Mr Ivan Liu, a Sustainability Strategy Associate in Top international Holdings, invited Earth Society to conduct an online Global Warming talk for their staffs on 22 Jun.

On 22 Jun, Earth Society joined Mr Ivan Liu (via MS Teams) at 3.45 pm. We conducted a Global Warming talk for about 30 staffs from 4 pm to 5 pm. We presented on the effects of Climate change on the world and showcased various solutions that scientists recommended to curb climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs). We also touched on the issue of deforestation and world hunger. Top international holdings staffs listened attentively to the talk.

Feedback from Staffs:

The talk contains insightful statistics that show clearly the major causes of global warming. It provided some solutions on how to tackle the problems. It showed how our daily habits as simple as eating meat can contribute to Global Warming.

I like how the talk links our daily habits to climate change. I learn the Environmental impact of livestock industry.

The talk is very insightful and make me aware of current global warming situation. I learn Animal agriculture is one of the biggest GHG contributor. Eating less meat or more fruits and vegetables could help.

It is an insightful talk supported by data and allow us to be aware how we can participate to slow down Global warming. I learn about Meatless Days and the use of Happy Cow app to easily identify Veg restaurants.

Online Biodiversity talk @ Shell (Jun)

Mr Danny Kumar, New Business Development Manager at Shell Eastern Petroleum Pte Ltd, invited Earth Society to conduct an online Biodiversity Loss Talk for their staffs on 10 Jun. This is the 2^nd time Shell invited us to conduct a talk for their staffs.

On 10 Jun, Earth Society team joined Mr Danny (via MS Teams platform) at 10.45 am. We conducted a Biodiversity Loss talk for about 200 staffs from 11 am to 12 pm. 

We presented on Overfishing, Deforestation, Climate change, Loss in Biodiversity and Factory farming. We featured WWF 2020 Living Planet Index report which shows that 68% of wildlife are lost from 1970s to 2016. We touched on issues such as reduce Fish consumption, reduce Factory farming, Veggie days and UNEP ‘Planetary Health Diet’. We also showed that if everyone on the planet consumes resources as Singaporeans do, we will need 3 planets to sustain our consumption habits. We need to reduce our consumption pattern to keep it within the limits of 1 planet. 

Shell Pte Ltd staffs listened attentively to the talk and participated actively in the Q & A session after the talk.

在地球日当天，新传媒电台第8播道《狮城有约》制作人Annzy 邀请地球协会副会长（刘先生）和新加坡理工大学助理教授（陈植能博士）上《非常访谈》节目。

Online GW talk @ Indeed Singapore Operations (Apr)

Ms Jessie Tan, Office Manager in Indeed Singapore Operations Pte Ltd, invited Earth Society to conduct an online Global Warming talk for their staffs on 21 Apr. The talk is part of the Earth week event that the company organized.

On 21 Apr, Earth Society joined Ms Jessie (via Zoom) at 10.45 am. Mr Venkata Sai from Indeed (India) and Mr Hiroki from Indeed (Japan) join in the session as well. This is the first time that employees from other countries join in our GW talk.

We conducted a Global Warming talk for Indeed staffs in Singapore, India and Japan from 11 am to 12 pm. We presented on the effects of Climate change on the world and showcased various solutions that scientists recommended to curb climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs). We also touched on the issue of deforestation and world hunger. Indeed staffs listened attentively to the talk.

During this pandemic period, we are glad that more companies are organizing Green events online to promote Environmental awareness and encourage their staffs to adopt a more sustainable way of Living.

Panel Discussion @ Anderson Secondary (Apr)

Ms Elizabeth Tio, from Anderson Secondary, invited Earth Society to participate in their Panel Discussion on Climate change on 07 Apr. The Panel discussion was held as part of their Humanities Week program. Other than Earth Society, Anderson Secondary also invited Ms Melissa Low from Energy Studies Institute in NUS and Ms Gurga S from Shiok Meats (a cell-based company which grow meat from cells.) to join in the Panel discussion. The Panel discussion was conducted online (via Zoom) from 8 am to 9 am for the Sec 3 to Sec 5 students.

Prior to the actual event, Anderson Secondary arranged for 2 online meetings with the speakers to run through the program details and discuss on the topic of Climate change. Anderson Secondary requested the speakers to write a message to the students. The speakers’ message and speakers’ profile are placed in a 11-page reading material that the school prepared for the students who attend the event.

On 07 Apr, Earth Society joined in the Panel discussion at 7.45 am. Each speaker was given 10 mins to present to the students, followed by a 20 mins Q & A session.

Ms Melissa Low presented on how climate change is affecting Singapore and SG Green Plan, Ms Gurga presented on how growing meat from cells reduce the environmental impact of the animal industry, Mr Low CK presented on reducing meat consumption/ supporting Meatless Mondays to reduce Climate change. Students listened attentively to the presentations and actively participated in the Q & A session.

We are glad that the schools are organizing panel discussions and inviting speakers from various environmental organizations to speak to students on the urgency of Climate change and discuss on Solutions to climate change. Let’s hope the schools and students adopt life-style changes to reduce climate change and preserve the precious food and water resources on our planet.

Online GW talk @ Canberra Secondary (Apr)

As part of the Earth Day event, Mrs Lim Suet Peng (HOD CCE/ VIA) from Canberra Secondary, invited Earth Society to conduct 2 online Global Warming talks for the school cohort on 23 Apr. Mrs Lim also invited a speaker from Singapore Botanic Gardens to conduct a Heritage Talk for the students during the online Assembly event.

On 23 Apr, Earth Society joined in the online Zoom meeting at 7.45 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk for Sec 1 and 2 students from 8 am to 8.30 am. We conducted another Global Warming talk for Sec 3 and 4 students from 9 am to 9.30 am  We presented on the effects of Climate change on the world and showcased various solutions that scientists recommended to curb climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs). Students and teachers listened attentively to the talk.

After our talk, Ms Soon from Botanic Gardens presented on the history of Botanic gardens. She introduced the Swan lake and various attractions in Botanic gardens to the students. Ms Soon also featured NParks’ “Heritage Tree Scheme” in her talk. This scheme allows a person to nominate a Heritage Tree to conserve Singapore’s mature trees. We are glad that many schools are engaging Green organizations to speak to the students on Conserving Nature and protecting the planet for the young generations.

We hope more students will adopt an Eco-friendly lifestyle to preserve the Ecosystems in Nature, reduce green house gas emissions and conserve the Natural resources on our planet.

Online GW talk @ Rivervale Primary (Apr)

Mdm Azrina, a teacher in Rivervale Primary, invited Earth Society to conduct an online Global Warming talk for the school cohort on 12 Apr.

On 12 Apr, Earth Society joined in the online Zoom meeting at 7.15 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk for P1 to P6 students from 7.30 am to 8 am. We presented on the effects of Climate change on the world and showcased various solutions that scientists recommended to curb climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs).

The teachers used Kahoot online tool to create a Kahoot Quiz for the students.

After the talk, students participated actively in a Kahoot Quiz session to answer questions related to the talk. Many students paid attention to the talk and answered the Quiz questions correctly.

Bishan North Zone RC Earth Hour event (Mar)

Mr Tan Hoe Sing, Chairman of Bishan North Zone 1 RC, invited Earth Society to participate in their “One Earth, Save it” Earth Hour event on 27 Mar.

Due to the pandemic situation, the “One Earth, Save it” event was held online via the Zoom platform. The event was hosted by 2 volunteers wearing the WWF Earth hour logo. Marymount residents were invited to join the event online from 8 pm to 9.15 pm.

Mdm Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State in both Ministry of Education and Ministry of Manpower, MP for Marymount SMC, gave an opening address entitled ‘Speak up for Nature’ during the Zoom event.

Earth Society conducted a 5 mins presentation on Global Warming during the event. We gave a brief overview of how Climate change is affecting the world and encourage our citizen to reduce meat consumption, support Meatless Mondays to reduce Climate change.

Marymount residents shared on their Eco-efforts such as conducting up-cycling workshops, supporting NEA’s ‘Cash for Trash’ program, recycling electronic waste and collecting recyclables (e.g. plastic bottles, cardboards etc).

Music Heart Band group provided online live singing to entertain the residents. Children from PCF Sparkletots provided online performance for the residents.

After the event, Mr Tan Hoe Sing requested Earth Society to record a 15 min video presentation on Global Warming. The video was placed in 'Bishan North Zone 1' Facebook page to provide more info for the residents:

We are glad that more grass roots organizations are organizing Green events online to spread the Eco-message to the residents. We hope the green message can spread far and wide among the residents in Singapore.

Mr Bernard Koh, Senior Engineer in at Infineon Technologies, invited Earth Society to conduct an online Biodiversity Loss Talk for their staffs on 26 Mar. The talk is part of the Earth Hour event that the company organized. This is the 2^nd time Infineon Technologies invited us to conduct a talk for their staffs.

Online GW talk @ Nan Hua High (Mar)

Nan Hua High Service Learning Club organized a National Youth Environment Conference (NYEC) 2021 together with students from their Talent Development Programme (sKy). The event was held via an online platform on 18 and 19 March 2021.

Nan Hua High invited Earth Society onboard to send a guest speaker to specifically talk about the topic on Climate Action. They also invited another speaker from WWF Cambodia to speak on climate action.

On 18 Mar, Earth Society joined in the online NYEC Zoom meeting at 12.40 pm. We conducted a Global Warming talk for about 150 students from 12.55 pm to 2pm. We presented on the effects of Climate change on the world and showcased various solutions that scientists recommended to curb climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs). The students listened attentively to the talk.

We are glad that more Clubs in schools are promoting the eco-message to the students. We hope the eco-message can spread far and wide among the students and the youths.

Online GW talk @ Jurong Secondary (Mar)

Ms Fang Shi Lin, Teacher-in-charge of NPCC in Jurong Secondary, invited Earth Society to conduct an online Global Warming talk for the NPCC cadets on 05 Mar.

On 05 Mar, Earth Society joined in the online Zoom meeting at 2.15 pm. We conducted a Global Warming talk for about 60 NPCC cadets from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. We presented on the effects of Climate change on the world and showcased various solutions that scientists recommended to curb climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs). The NPCC cadets listened attentively to the talk.

After the talk, Ms Fang Shi Lin helped to gather some feedback from the cadets and send the feedback to us via email.
