Symposium @ Tanglin Trust School (20 Mar)

Mr Peter Milne, Director of Target4Green
Educational Consultancy and Training, invited Earth Society to set up a booth at TTS Sustainability Symposium @ Tanglin Trust School on 20 May. Tanglin Trust School is a British International School in Singapore.

On 20 Mar, about 130 student delegates from 8 schools attended the Symposium. The students attended workshops, discussed on UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and pledged to take some Climate Actions for positive changes. They also visited booths from different organizations to learn about various sustainability issues.

During the Symposium, Earth Society members set up and manned a booth at Tanglin Trust School from 11 am to 4.30 pm. At our booth, students and teachers received Eco-leaflets and watched a short video clip on Climate change. We discussed on the ways to reduce Global Warming and recommended solutions such as eating less meat, going veggie 1-day-a-week to help to reduce green house gases.

Other organizations that participated in the event included Nature Society, Green Monday, FoodScape Collective, PUB, PM Haze, Secondsguru etc.

More info of the event can be found at TTS website:

NTU GreenFest 2019 (19 Mar)

Mr Ong Han Yang, NTU Earthlink Events Executive subcommittee, invited Earth Society to set up a booth during their NTU GreenFest event on 19 & 20 Mar. This is the 6th year NTU Earthlink invited us to their event. Other organizations that participated in the event include Nature Society, Food Bank, Tzu Ji Youth and PM Haze.

This year’s theme for Greenfest is “Towards A Zero-Waste Future”.
Building on last year’s theme of ‘Eco-ProMise’, where GreenFest participants made their promise to protect Mother Earth, Earthlink wanted to bring the NTU community along to fulfil this promise and start taking small actions towards a positive change that will bring NTU closer to the dream of Zero Waste.

On 19 Mar, NTU Earthlink invited Professor Kwok Kian Woon, Associate Provost of Student Life, to grace the opening ceremony for EarthFest. The opening ceremony was followed by a veggie lunch for the participating organizations and the volunteers at the event

On 19 Mar, Earth Society members set up and manned a booth at NTU LT1A Canopy K from 9 am to 5 pm. At our booth, students watched a 2 mins video clip on “How Global Warming is affecting the world?”. After watching the clip, they would answer 2 questions based on the video to get a stamp on their GreenFest card. When they had completed the activities in their GreenFest card, they could exchange the card for a token prize from NTU Earthlink.

At the end of the event, many students showed interest in the ways to reduce global warming and signed up in our email list to receive more information on environmental protection.

This year, we could only participate in GreenFest on 19 Mar as we were engaged in another event on 20 Mar.

Climate Conversations @ A Good Space (Feb)

Climate Conversations Team invited Earth Society members to attend a Conversation on Climate Change on 26 Feb. The Conversation was held @ A Good Space (NVPC, Clark Quay Central).

Our members get to know of the Climate Conversations Team from their Booth at EarthFest in Jan 2019. The CC Team had conducted 60 climate conversations, reaching out to hundreds of people to discuss on Climate change and the role we can play to reduce climate change.

On 26 Feb, Mr Low attended the Climate Conversation from 7 pm to 9.30 pm. About 30 persons attended the Conversation. We broke into 3 groups of 10. Each group was guided by a facilitator to discuss on Climate change.

Ms Ang was the facilitator in the group that Mr Low joined. Ms Ang showed the group an introduction video on Climate change The 12 mins video showed us how climate change is affecting the world (e.g. more droughts, stronger storms, Arctic ice melts etc). We discussed about the effects of climate change and what we can do to reduce climate change. Some solutions discussed in the group included changing to green energy (solar etc), reduce driving, eating less meat.

Ms Ang informed that if we can get 16% of the Singapore population to discuss on Climate change, it will gradually grow to a nation-wide movement to increase awareness on the topic and encourage people to take actions to curb climate change.

The discussion ended with Ms Ang showing us a 10 mins video on the solutions to reduce climate change.

We are glad that there are NGO organizations such as Climate Conversations that are reaching out to the public and companies to engage them in Conversations on Climate change.
