NTU GreenFest 2017 (20 to 21 Mar)

Ms Ng Pei Rou, Deputy Director of Events Executive (Internal) of Earthlink NTU, invited Earth Society to set up a booth during their NTU GreenFest event on 20 & 21 Mar. This is the 4th year NTU Earthlink invited us to their event. Other organizations that participated in the event include Nature Society, NEA, SEC, PM Haze etc.

On 20 Mar, NTU Earthlink invited Minster of Environment and Water Resources, Dr Amy Khor, to grace the opening ceremony for EarthFest. The opening ceremony was followed by a veggie lunch for the participating organizations and the volunteers at the event.

On 20 and 21 Mar, Earth Society members set up and manned a booth at NTU LT1A Canopy K from 9 am to 5 pm. At our booth, students watched a 2 mins video clip on “How Global Warming is affecting the world?”. After watching the clip, they would answer 2 questions based on the video to get a stamp on their GreenFest card. When they have completed the activities in their GreenFest card, they can exchange the card for a token prize from NTU Earthlink.


At the end of the event, many students showed interest in the ways to reduce global warming and signed up in our email list to receive more information on environmental protection.

Assembly talk @ Feng Shan and Chang Kat Primary (Mar)

Ms Tan Ai Ling from Feng Shan Primary invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the school cohort on 24 Mar. This is the second time Feng Shan Primary invited us to talk to the students.

On 24 Mar, Earth Society reached Feng Shan Primary at 7.15 am. We conducted a Global Warming Assembly talk for P1 to P6 students from 7.30 to 8 am. We presented on how Global warming is affecting the world and showcased various solutions to climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs.)

After the talk, we set up a booth at the school canteen from 8 to 10.30 am to pass eco-leaflets to the students and gather feedback for the talk.

Mdm Nur Iffah, Year Head Middle Primary, from Chang Kat Primary invited Earth Society to conduct a Global Warming Assembly talk for the lower primary students on 27 Mar.
                
On 27 Mar, Earth Society team reached Chang Kat Primary at 8.45 am. We conducted a Global Warming Assembly talk for the P1 to P3 students from 9 to 9.30 am. Students and teachers listened attentively to the talk. We left the school after the Assembly talk.

Assembly talk @ St Stephen School and Endeavour Primary (Mar)

Ms Nadira from St Stephen’s School invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the school cohort on 06 Mar.

On 06 Mar, Earth Society reached St Stephen's School at 7.20 am. We conduct a Global Warming Assembly talk for P1 to P6 students from 7.45 to 8.15 am. We presented on how Global warming is affecting the world and showcased various solutions to climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs.)

After the talk, we set up a booth at the school canteen from 8.30 to 11 am to pass eco-leaflets to the students and gather feedback for the talk.

Mr Matt Lim from Endeavour Primary invited Earth Society to conduct a Global Warming Assembly talk for the school cohort on 21 Mar

On 21 Mar, Earth Society team reached Endeavour Primary at 7.30 am. We conducted a Global Warming Assembly talk for the P1 to P6 students from 7.45 to 8.15 am. Students and teachers listened attentively to the talk. We left the school after the Assembly talk.

Assembly talk @ Yishun Town Secondary and Singapore Chinese Girls School (Mar)

Ms Lily Choo, a teacher in Yishun Town Secondary, invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the Sec 2 students on 01 Mar. Ms Lily hope that the students can understand more about the environment and how they can play a part in protecting it before they embark on their Service Learning Project.

On 01 Mar, Earth Society team reached Yishun Town Secondary at 9.45 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk for the Sec 2 students from 10 am to 10.45 am.
After the talk, we set up a booth in the school canteen to pass more info to students.




Ms Julia Lee, Science and Environment Club teacher-in-charge from Singapore Chinese Girls School, invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the Sec 1 and Sec 2 students on 08 Mar.

On 08 Mar, Earth Society team reached Singapore Chinese Girls School at 10.15 am. We conducted a Global Warming Assembly talk for the Sec 1 and Sec 2 students from 10.30 am to 11.15 am. Students listened attentively to the talk and participated actively in the Quiz at the end of the talk.

After the talk, we set up a booth at the school canteen from 11.15 to 12.30 pm to gather feedback and pass more info to interested teachers and students.

- The talk on global warming is very informative to provide students with more understanding of the issues.

- The websites provided by Earth society have given students additional resources on global warming which is very useful.

- Good to share more practical solutions to the problems faced by the environment as stated in the slides.

EarthFest @ Marina Barrage (Feb)


Michael Broadhead, organizer of EarthFest sustainability festival, invited Earth Society to participate in the event as an Educational partner. EarthFest was held at Marina Barrage on 12 Feb (Sun) from 11 am to 3.30 pm. This is the 2nd time we participated in this Eco-event.

Earthfest partnered with over 50 organizations and businesses to create a carnival that gave people a comprehensive view of sustainability. EarthFest invited many environment NGOs such as Sea Shepherd, Nature Society, PM Haze and Animal Allies to set up booths during the event to inform the participants of issues such as Climate change, Deforestation, overfishing and biodiversity losses.

On 12 Feb, Earth Society members reached Marina Barrage at 10.30am. We set up a booth to showcase the issue of Deforestation in the world. Deforestation in Malaysia and Indonesia are mainly due to palm oil plantation while Deforestation in Brazil Amazon is mainly due to cattle ranching and the production of soya bean. Many participants were surprised to learn that 65% of Deforestation in Brazil Amazon is due to cattle ranching and that eating beef contributes to Deforestation in the world. 


The EarthFest carnival had a Farmers Market section where Fireflies Health farm and Quan Fa Organic farm sold their organic vegetables to participants. Other Green businesses such as Little Green Kitchen, VeganBurg, Handmade heros, Suka House and Brownice set up booths during the event to sell their eco-friendly products.

Health and Environment talk @ ITE Central (Feb)

Ms Kwek Li Lin, Admin Head in ITE Central, invited Earth Society to conduct a Health and Environment talk for staffs in ITE on 28 Feb.

On 28 Feb, Earth Society team arrived at ITE Central (Ang Mo Kio) at 11.15 am. We conducted the talk for about 40 ITE staffs from 11.30 am to 12.15 pm. We presented on Singapore’s Health problem (Obesity, Cancer, Heart disease, Diabetes). We featured World Health Organizations report which showed insufficient intake of fruits and veggies causes 10% of heart disease, cancer, stroke deaths worldwide. We also presented on animal factory farms, global warming, water shortage and environmental impact of a meat diet. ITE staffs listened attentively to the talk. After the talk, many staffs came forward to get more info from us.

 
At the end of the talk, we join in a salad lunch with the ITE staffs.
ITE catered a salad lunch for this event to Go Green for health and for the environment.

Assembly talk @ Yishun Secondary (Feb)

Mdm Faizah Bte Abu Bakar, HOD Humanities, from Yishun Secondary, invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the school on 17 Feb. This is the 2nd year Yishun Secondary invited us to speak to their students.

On 17 Feb, Earth Society team reached Yishun Secondary at 11.45 am. We conducted an Environmental Conservation talk for Sec 1 to Sec 5 students from 12 to 12.30 pm. We presented on Overfishing in the sea, Deforestation in the land and Green House Gas emission in the atmosphere. Students and teachers listened attentively to the talk.




Teacher’s Feedback:  

- Very informative and applicable to real life. A good platform to increase the awareness of human impacts on the eco-system.

- The information shared was relevant and provided interesting insights for the audience. The videos were engaging and captured the audience’s attention.

- Relevant pointers for our Geography syllabus such as weather and climate (Sec 3) as well as food resources (Sec 4). The pointers are also relevant for Sec 2 project work.

Assembly talk @ Zhong Hua and Jurong West Primary (Jan_Feb)

Mrs. Joan Benjamin, Environmental Education Advisor in Zhong Hua Primary, invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the school cohort on 24 Jan. This is the 3rd year the school invited us to speak to the students.

On 24 Jan, Earth Society team reached Zhonghua Primary at 7.30 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk for P1 to P6 students from 7.45 to 8.15 am.

We presented on how Global warming is affecting the world and showcased various solutions to climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green en ergy and 3Rs.)



Teacher’s Feedback:  (Zhong Hua Primary)
- Learning objectives were achieved
- Contents covered suitable and relevant for pupils in this time and age
- Suitable resources were used during presentation (videos used were impactful)
- Presenter was clear, engagement level with audience was good   
                                            

Ms Jean, Head of Aesthetics in Jurong West Primary, invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the lower primary students on 16 Feb.


On 16 Feb, Earth Society team reached Jurong West Primary at 12.30 pm. We conducted a Global Warming Assembly talk for the P1 to P3 students from 12.45 to 1.30 pm. Students listened attentively and participated actively in the Quiz after the talk. We left the school after the Assembly talk.

Play Lah event @ Sing Expo (Jan)

Kampung Senang invited Earth Society to participate in the SG Playlah 2017 event held at Singapore Expo Hall 5 from 19 Jan to 22 Jan. Kampung Senang held a Green and Healthy exhibition in the PlayLah edutainment section as a form of public education to encourage the public to embrace a Green and Healthy lifestyle.



Kampung Senang designed a large monopoly-type Board game to engage the public. 4 people can play the game at one go and participants learn tips on Green and Healthy Living as they roll the dice and move to different sections in the Board game.












Earth Society volunteers help to man a booth in the event. We let the participants play a ‘GHG and Water usage’ Quiz at our booth. Participants learn about the amount of Green House Gas (GHG) emitted to produce certain types of food as they completed the Quiz at the booth.

International Volunteer Day @ Temasek Poly (Nov)

Temasek Polytechnic Community Service Club (TPCSC) invited Earth Society to set up a booth during their International Volunteer Day event on 28 and 29 Nov to promote environmental awareness in Temasek Poly.

TPCSC get to know about Earth Society through TP Green Interest Group (TPGIG) which invited us to conduct a Global Warming talk in a previous event.

TPCSC also invited other NGOs such as Food Bank, Lion’s Befrienders and Club Rainbow to promote their causes in this event.

On 28 and 29 Nov, Earth Society team set up a booth in Temasek Poly to pass Eco-leaflets to the students. Students can also play a Quiz of guessing the amount of Green House Gas (GHG) produced when we produce different types of food.


The location of the booth is just outside the Library. Thus, we have a good flow of traffic and many students came to our booth to get Eco info from us. We manned the booth from 11 am to 3 pm on both days.

Ms Charlotte Gayondato, volunteer Leader of TPCSC, wrote us an appreciation email after the event : “I would like to thank Earth Society for participating in International Volunteer Day 2016 ! I hope you have had a positive experience in Temasek Polytechnic and collaborating with TPCSC. “

We are glad that many student groups are initiating programs to promote various causes in their school campus. May the youths show care and concern to the society and take actions to build a more sustainable future for everyone.

Assembly talk @ Canberra & Fernvale Primary (Nov)

Mr Kasni Kasim, Senior Teacher (CCE), from Canberra Primary School invited Earth Society to conduct 2 Assembly talks for the school on 01 Nov.

On 01 Nov, Earth Society team reached Canberra Primary School at 11.45 am. We conducted a Global Warming Assembly talk for the P1 and P2 students from 12 to 12.30 pm. We conducted another talk for the P3 to P6 students from 1 to 1.30 pm.
We presented on how Global warming is affecting the world and showcased various solutions to climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs.) Students and teachers listened attentively to the talk.

Thank you for coming today to share about the global warming issue and Earth Conservation. The teachers really found it useful to inform the students on the need to care for the environment as it will indirectly affect the whole Earth. Assembly talk @ Fuhua and Jurongville Secondary (Oct)

Ms Huang Anna, HOD/Character Development and Student Leadership, from Fuhua Secondary invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the school on 26 Oct.



On 26 Oct, Earth Society team reached FuHua Secondary at 9.50 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk to the Sec 1 and Sec 2 students from 10.05 to 10.45 am. We presented on how climate change is affecting various countries in the world and showcased solutions to climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs.) Students and teachers listened attentively to the talk.









After the talk, we set up a booth at the school canteen from 10.50am to 12.30pm to gather feedback and pass more info to the students.

Ms Josephine Han from Jurongville Secondary invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the school on 28 Oct.

On 28 Oct, Earth Society team conducted a Global Warming talk for Jurongville Sec 1 students from 8.40 am to 9.30 am. Students listened attentively to the talk and participated in the Quiz at the end of the talk.

After the talk, we set up a booth at the school canteen from 9.30 to 11 am to gather feedback and pass more info to the students.

Thank you for the great sharing at Fuhua Secondary School. Earth Society’s sharing was inspiring and informative and it had taught our students many meaningful messages pertaining to environmental issues. Assembly talk @ TKGS and Hillgrove Secondary (Oct)

As part of the school's Values In Action Festival, Ms Angie Sew from Tanjong Katong Girls School (TKGS) invited Earth Society to set up a booth and conduct an Assembly talk for the Sec 3 students on 21 Oct.

On 21 Oct, Earth Society team reached TKGS at 10.20 am. We set up a booth to distribute eco-leaflets to the students from 10.30 to 11.10 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk to the Sec 3 students from 11.20 to 12.10 pm. We presented on how climate change is affecting various countries in the world and showcased solutions to climate change. (Plant trees, Eat less meat, Green energy and 3Rs.) Students and teachers listened attentively to the talk.


Ms Chia Yew Loon, Upper Secondary Year Head of Hillgrove Secondary, invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk on 24 Oct as part of their post exam activities. Ms Chia hope that our talk could encourage students to change their mindset and do more to protect Mother Earth

On 24 Oct, we conducted a Global Warming talk for the Sec 2 students from 10.45 to 11.30 am followed by a 5 mins Quiz. Students paid full attention to the talk and participated actively in the Quiz after the talk. Many students came forward to get some Eco-leaflets from us after the Assembly talk.

Global Warming talk @ Pasir Ris Crest Secondary (30 Sep)

Ms Kwai Lin Mimi Lam, a teacher in Pasir Ris Crest Secondary, invited Earth Society to conduct a Global warming talk for a class of Sec 1NT students on 30 Sep.

On 30 Sep, Earth Society team reached Pasir Ris Crest Secondary at 11.10 am. We conducted a Global Warming talk for 40 Sec 1NT students in the AVA room from  11.20 am to 12.10 pm. Students listened attentively to the talk. After the talk, many students came forward to write some feedback for the talk.

Assembly talk @ Woodlands Primary (15 Sep)

Ms Sharifah, a teacher in Woodlands Primary, invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for the upper primary students on 15 Sep.

On 15 Sep, Earth Society team reached Woodlands Primary at 7.30am. We conducted a Global Warming Assembly talk for the P4 to P6 students from 7.45 to 8.15 am. Students and teachers listened attentively to the talk.

After the talk, we set up a booth at the school canteen to gather feedback and pass more info to interested teachers and students. We manned the booth from 8.30 am to 10.30 am.



Students’ Feedback:

The lesson is great! It had taught me the dangers of Global warming! As I like penguins, I would like to save the Earth to save the penguins’ habitat. I learnt that there will be meatout Thursdays in the future, hope that it will be successful. – Lee Guan Feng, P6, Woodlands Primary
