Panel Discussion @ Cowspiracy Screening event (Apr and Jun)

As part of EarthFlim Festival 2016 (http://earthfestsingapore.com/), many environment groups screened the ground- breaking documentary “Cowspiracy” to their members and associates in Apr.

Hailed by acclaimed director, Darren Aronofsky, as “a documentary that will rock and inspire the environmental movement”, Cowspiracy explores the impact of animal agriculture on the environment, and investigates the policies of environmental organizations such as Greenpeace, Sierra Club and Rainforest Action Network on this issue.

Earth Society was invited to attend 2 screening events to act as panellist to assist in the Discussions after the documentary screening.

The first screening event was organized by the Focus on Food Club in United World College Of South East Asia (UWCSEA) - East Campus.

On 20 Apr, the club held a Cowspiracy Screening and Discussion event at their campus for 40 students and parents from 4:30 pm to 6:45 pm. They invited 2 UWCSEA teachers and 2 NGOs (ACRES and Earth Society) to participate in the panellist discussion.

After watching the documentary, Grace Windheim and Adinda Soerono from the Focus on food Club facilitated a discussion on the documentary. The audience asked many questions on animal agriculture, shifting consumer habits, adopting veggie days etc. We had a lively and fruitful discussion followed by a veggie dinner provided by the school.

The second event was a private screening held at Trellis Towers Condominium function room.

Mr Wan Siew Onn and Mr Thim, residents of Trellis Towers, organized the screening and discussion in support of Earthfilm Festival. The event was held on 24 Apr from 5 pm to 7 pm followed by a veggie potluck dinner. About 30 people attended the event.

Encouraged by the response of the audience to the documentary, Earth Society organized a Cowspiracy Screening and Discussion event for teachers and associates at Kampung Senang on 04 Jun. About 20 people attended the screening event.

We are glad that various environment groups are taking the initiative to screen the documentary and reach out to their communities to promote environmental awareness and a sustainable way of living. We hope to see more of such Eco-friendly initiatives in the future to encourage everyone to join in to protect the environment.

Feedback from Teachers:

Thank you for the wonderful talk in April. The kids thoroughly enjoyed it. They loved the videos and were more aware of how they can contribute to help save Earth.

Teachers have expressed similar thoughts. We found the videos attention- catching and informative and the speaker was clear and confident. Some, however felt that some portion of the content may be too difficult for the lower primary students to handle. But the speaker had overcome that through the videos. It is only hopeful that the students have understood the messages embedded in the video.   - Mrs Sarah, Teacher, Hua Min Primary

Very informative presentation, reminds us of our primary responsibility to save the Earth
- Mr John Chew, Teacher, Nan Hua Primary
