Global Warming Seminar at Aljunied Area on 19 Mar [Fri] evening [7:15pm to 9:15 pm]

Feb is the driest month in Singapore in 140 yrs of record keeping.

The rainfall last month is only 6.7 mm [almost 1/3 of the 18.7 mm in previous years]http://news.sg.msn.com/cna/article.aspx?cp-documentid=3915611

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1039859/1/.html

We are now seeing scorched land every where in Singapore. Most of the grass patches are turning yellow because of insufficient water. : (

Does this phenomenal sets you thinking about what is happening to the world?

Singapore has enough water for all to drink, but what about the Droughts that is now happening in Phillipphines/ Vietnam/ China [Si Cuan]/ Africa/ Austria / US ?

Does the people have enough water to grow their crops [which is used to feed the world] ?

Do the people have enough water to drink?

Do these questions make you ponder about Global Warming?

What will happen to the planet if the world’s temperature increases by 1,2,3 or 5 to 6 degrees?

How much time does leading scientists think the world has before we reach a point where climate change becomes irreversible?

Do you wish to know what effective measures prominent scientists such as NASA’s director Dr James Hansen and UN IPCC Chairman Dr Rajendra Pachauri recommend to curb global warming?

What are the latest findings of Climate scientists in March & Dec 2009 Copenhagen conference in Denmark?
……..

If you are concern about the above issues, you are invited to attend a FREE Global warming Seminar by our Global Warming Study Group on the 19 Mar 2010 [Fri] at Kampong Senang Aljunied [Near Aljunied MRT].

You are welcome to bring your friends and family to attend the event :> : )

[ If you have attended previous Global Warming seminar and find it informative. Could you help to recommend the event to your friends/ family who are concern about the environment? :> ]………….

Feedbacks of Global Warming Talk conducted at Chai Chee Secondary School on 22 Feb 2010
Attendance : 800 students, 60 teachers

..............

Feedback from Chai Chee Principal, Mr Ang

To Mdm Ho, Eunos Principal,
We had an assembly talk given by your teacher, Mr Low Chip Khoon, on global
warming. It was a very interesting and engaging talk enjoyed by both
teachers and pupils. Mr Low's presentation has definitely heightened our
pupils' interest on the topic and engaged them through his passion and
enthusiasm regarding the topic.

We would like to put on record our heartfelt thanks to your school for
releasing Mr Low to share at our assembly and for his generosity in sharing
with us his knowledge on the subject matter.

Thank you very much and good day.

Mr Ang
Principal/Chai Chee Sec
.........

Feedback from Teachers:

The talk is very informative and engaging. Mr Low knows his content very well and is able to engage the staff and students. I personally have learnt a lot from the talk. --- Mr Anwar (HOD PE/CCA)

Mr Low's presentation is informative and interesting. He spoke with passion. In fact, when the teachers were having lunch in the lounge, they asked me so many questions about whether vegetarianism can truely help. I said of course. At least, there is some awareness. --- Ms Kong Su May (HOD PCCG)

The talk is very relevant to the Sec 2 students as the topic is in the Geography syllabus. It is very informative and serves as a prelude to the topic that they will learn in Term 3. The information shared is very relevant and made `real' to the students. --- Ms Lim Siew Lian (HOD DM)

The speaker was so informative and engaging. I lost interest in Geography since I was in sec 2 but Mr Low rekindled my interest in Geography at one -sitting yesterday. He prepared his talk so well and delivered it with great conviction and passion. I am now 'in' for saving the environment in a more conscious manner. Thank you for spreading the message, Mr Low!
--- Mrs Elsie Tan, AED (counselling) FTSC

Mr Low did a great job in giving useful and current information that delivers the reality of the situation. We have learnt alot about our world and the consequences of our actions to our own environment. Not only did I enjoy the learning but the flow of the delivery and the use of speeches and videos were great too. Thanks. --- Mrs Rosini Haniff (SH/History)

The talk does create awareness on myself and also the students that I spoke to. Hoping very much that all of us will unite and do something to slow down the process. I am sure every one of us does care for our mother nature in one way or another. Every little effort counts. --- Mdm Radziah (Mother Tongue Teacher)

Thanks for the information. --- Ms Jieru Wu (Maths Teacher)

Very enriching....at least we know the consequences of eating beef..and the need to try to go green...also the importance of the 3Rs... Thanks!
--- Mr Tan Joo Huat (Maths Teacher)

It was an enlightening and interesting presentation. --- Mrs Mohana Sivaprasad (Geography teacher)

Thank you for approving Mr Low to come our school to share with us on the Global Warming during our assembly talk. It was an informative talk who had made quite an impact on our students and teachers. Many teachers have feedback to me that his talk has brought them to be more aware of the urgency of doing something to the Global Warming. Many of them are willing to eat less meat to help reducing the Global Warming. Hopefully all of us are going to put in effort in many ways to help reducing Global Warming before it is too late.

--- Ms Tan Foong Heng (Environment Club, Teacher-in-charge)
Ms Tan attended Mr Low’s talk at Nature Society & decided to invite Mr Low to Chai Chee Secondary school to present the talk to the school

Drying Rivers, Lakes and Reservoirs

Share a documentary on Drying Rivers, Lakes and Reservoirs,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anXSPQyADac

Due to Global Warming, Seas, Rivers,Lakes and underground water reserves in the world are drying up. These impact the livelihoods of hundreds of millions people.
World’s major rivers drying - one-third are gone or going. Groundwater wells for 3 billion people are drying up.

Top 10 global river systems drying, ebbing away:China’s Salween River, Europe’s Danube, South America’s la Plata, North American Rio Grande, India’s Ganges, Pakistan’s Indus, Africa’s Nile and Lake Victoria, Australia’s Murray Darling, Southeast Asia’s Mekong-Lancang, China’s Yangtze … due to dams, over-extraction, overfishing and climate change.
The documentary also spells out the various lakes and rivers in Africa, America, Europe, Asia, India & China that are drying up.

We have to adopt more measures to conserve water and take a hard look at how we use water. The Stockholm water insititute states that 70% of the world's water is used by the agriculture sector with animal agriculture using a large portion of water. In Nov 2009, Lord Stern and Al Gore has urged the world to take more plant-based diet as the animal industry uses excessive amounts of water. [UN report states that producing 1kg of beef requires 15,500 litres of water. Producing 1 kg of maize only needs 900 litres of water.]
We have to heed the call now.

Reforestation Efforts in China [Si Cuan] & Africa [Rwanda]

Share 2 good BBC documentary on Reforestation in China & Afrcia, Rwanda .

Part 1 of BBC Documentary: Reforestation in China
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjGYFhMRjfE

Overgazing & overfarming in Lus plateau [near Si Cuan], have caused servere land degradation. When the land is stripped of vegetation, water washes away top soil which further degrades the land till the land becamea barren area.

Restoration Effort :
1. Stop animal-grazing / Stop farming on the land.
2. Plant vegetation. Build terrance to retain water.
3. Vegetation will slow down water flow.
When enough vegetation grows, streams will form.
More water encourage more vegetation which retains more water [positive cycle]
In 3 to 5 years the land would be restored.

The local community would benefit as they can then farm the land and gain food security. :>

Part 2 of BBC documentary: Reforestation in Afrcia Rwanda.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDQisEP7hjw

Reforestation in Africa Rwanda restored barren land to one full of vegetation. These protects the wetlands which ensures that enough water can flow to drive the hydro power-station downstream.

The documentary ends with a meaningful question: "Since we can restore the degraded land in China & Africa, which brings vegetation back to the land, and secures the future of the local people [as they can then farm on these lands], Why don't we reforest ALL the degraded land in the world? "

Surely we can do that :>:):>

The restored land can also sequece much CO2 in the soil.
That will be a BIG help in the fight against Climate change.
:) :>

Fishing and the State of our oceans

A documentary on Ocean and fishing “The End of the Line” was released on Jun 2009.

The film showcased the dire state of the ocean and the problem of overfishing.
Here’s the trailer of the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWB8KJ1aIJ4

Directors of “End of the line” discuss about the Crisis in the Ocean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhUOAm9Lx0o&NR=1

Below are some Facts on Fishing:
http://endoftheline.com/campaign/fish_facts/

According to the UNFAO [United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization], about 70 per cent of our global fisheries are now being fished close to, already at, or beyond their capacity. - The Earth's Carrying Capacity - Bruce Sundquist

As many as 90 per cent of all the ocean's large fish have been fished out.
- WWF [World Wildlife fund]
…..

Here are some News report on Overfishing and recent measures to protect the ocean:

1. From Deep Pacific, Ugly and tasty, with a Catch
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/10/science/10fish.html?_r=2&no_interstitial
‘The world’s insatiable appetite for fish, with its disastrous effects on populations of favorites like red snapper, monkfish and tuna, has driven commercial fleets to deeper waters in search of creatures unlikely to star on the Food Network.’
Unsustainable deep sea fishing depletes ocean of red snapper, monkfish, Tuna & Hoki

2. Scientist backed Blue-fin tuna trade ban:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091029/ts_afp/citesspeciestuna_20091029144739

MADRID (AFP) - – Scientists who advise fisheries regulators support a ban on trade in Atlantic bluefin tuna, a sushi staple, to protect the species from over-fishing, environmental groups WWF and Greenpeace said Thursday.
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas scientists concluded that the species' "current spawning biomass is less than 15 percent of what it once was before fishing began, meaning Atlantic bluefin tuna meets the criteria for a CITES Appendix I listing," they said in a statement.
……….

Some people think that Fish farming [Aquaculture] is a solution to help the Ocean.

That is NOT so.
The World’s current practice of Fish farming [Aqua-culture] is NOT a solution to
the Ocean.

In fact, it is contributing to the problem:
“End of the Line: Fish Farming”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B77bs2aploI

40% of the world’s fish catch is grounded into fish meal to feed farmed fishes [such as Salmon] and the livestock industries. [chickens and pigs]

The more fish farms the world has, the less fishes in the oceans.

Huge demand for omega-3 fatty acids depleting oceans worldwide for aquaculture:
http://news.mongabay.com/2009/0909-hance-aquaculture.html
‘It takes typically 5 pounds of ‘wild’ fish to produce 1pound of farmed fish’.

Using fish as livestock feed threatens global fisheries:
http://news.mongabay.com/2009/1118-hance_fishmeal.html
‘Thirty million tons – or 36 per cent – of the world's total fisheries catch each year is currently ground up into fishmeal and oil to feed farmed fish, chickens and pigs," world-renowned fishery researcher and co-author, Daniel Pauly, told the University of British Colombia (UBC).

Globally, pigs and chickens alone consume six times the amount of seafood as US consumers and twice that of Japan," lead author Jennifer Jacquet told UBC.
………

To solve our environmental crisis, we need to restore health to the Oceans:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QU89xabmrg

Massive commercial fishing has to be stopped, Deep sea Trawling has to be stopped. More areas of the ocean should be protected from fishing. [Currently, only 1% of the world’s ocean is protected from fishing.]

One practical way to limit the fishing industry is to reduce support for the fishing industry.

Reduce our fish intake [especially Tuna, salmons etc], or stop eating fish, to protect the oceans. :>

“Be Veg, Go Green, Save the planet.”
Low ck

P.S. To get the a Safe form of Omega-3, try ‘flaxseed, nuts, seeds’ etc as recommended by US Physician Committee for Responsible Medicine [PCRM]
http://www.pcrm.org/health/reports/fish_report.html

Safer Source of Omega-3 acids

Fishes contains mercury, heavy metals and other contaminants.[PCBs, Dioxin, Chlorane & DDT] These are harmful to humans and causes many disease such as cancer, heart disease and liver disease.

Alpha-linolenic acid, the only essential omega-3 fatty acid, is found in many vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, and fruits. It is concentrated in flaxseeds and flaxseed oil and also found in oils such as canola, soybean, walnut, and wheat germ. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in nuts, seeds, and soy products, as well as beans, vegetables, and whole grains.28,29 Corn, safflower, sunflower, and cottonseed oils are generally low in omega-3s. Fish consumption is by no means the only way to ensure adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

Climate change Authorities endorses Veg Solution to curb Global Warming

Hi Eco-friendly friends,

Recently, more Authorities on Climate change has given voice to the less-meat / More Veg Solution to curb climate change.

In Oct, Lord Stern, a former chief economist of the World Bank& author of the 2006 Stern Review, has requested the world to go veg to curb climate change.

Lord Stern, believes that the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December should call for an increase in the price of meat and other foods that contribute to climate change.

In an interview with "The Times", he said: “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better.”
"Times" online: Climate chief Lord Stern: Give up meat to save the planet http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article6891362.ece

A World Watch Institute Nov 2009 Report, written by researchers from World Bank Group, stated that the revised figure for Livestock's contribution to Global Green House Gas is at least 51%. [Up from the 18% quoted in the UN 2006 Livestock's long shadow Report.]
http://www.worldwatch.org/node/6294

..........

In Nov 09, Mr Al Gore, Environmental Advocate and 2007 Nobel peace prize winner also
acknowledge that the less-meat/ more veg diet helps in the current climate situation.

In an interview with ABC News, when Ms. Sales asked if he agreed with British climate expert Lord Nicholas Stern’s call for people to be vegetarian to reduce emissions, Mr. Gore replied, “It’s a legitimate point of view. Nick Stern is a very able advocate for whom I have enormous respect… I have cut back sharply on the meat that I eat and it’s absolutely correct that the growing meat intensity of diets around the world is one of the issues connected to this global crisis. Not only because of the CO2 involved, but also because
of the water consumed in the process.” The former vice president went on to say, “You can add in the health consequences as well. We’ve all heard from our doctors for many years that vegetables and fruits should occupy a bigger part of all of our diets, and that’s important for a lot of reasons. I’ve made those changes.”
Full interview for Mr Al Gore can be seen on :
http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2009/11/05/2733587.htm

So the less-meat/ Be Veg solution is now widely endorsed as one of the important Solution to Climate change.

Let's spread this message far & wide and make this necessary lifestyle change [taking
more plant-based food] to curb global warming,

Low ck

The former vice president went on to say, You can add in the health consequences as well. Weve all heard from our doctors for many years that vegetables and fruits should occupy a bigger part of all of our diets, and thats important for a lot of reasons. Ive made those changes.

Lord Stern on Veg diet

In Oct 09, Lord Stern, Chief Economist, Author of 2006 Stern Review on Economics of climate change, urge the world to adopt the vegetarian diet to curb global warming.

Lord Stern, believes that the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December
should call for an increase in the price of meat and other foods that contribute to climate change.

In an interview with "The Times", he said: Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the worlds resources. A vegetarian diet is better.
