Assembly Talk @ CHIJ St Joseph’s Convent (24 Feb)

Ms Grace Tan from CHIJ St Joseph’s Convent invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk for Sec 3 students on 24 Feb. This is the third year she invited Earth Society to her school.

On 24 Feb, Earth Society members arrived at St Joseph’s Convent at 12 pm. We conducted an Environmental Conservation Assembly talk for Sec 3 students from 12.15 to 1.15pm. We presented on Overfishing, Deforestation, Animal factory farms, Greenhouse gas emissions and introduce some Environmental Heros to the students. (Sea Shepherd, Dr Jane Goodall, Dr James Hansen etc.) Students listen attentively to the talk and participated actively in the quiz at the end of the talk.

After the talk, we set up a booth at the school canteen from 1.15pm to 2.15pm to gather feedback from students and pass additional info (Climate change booklets / Environmental Website leaflets) to interested teachers and students.

We left the school by 2.20pm.

Feedback from Students:

I felt that the presentation is very clear and persuasive. It would help to educate students to save the environment. The use of video and stories of famous people really impress me and should be used more frequently.

I found the talk very, very educational, although I have already known to some degree about the issues involved. I did not know that the rate of deforestation is so bad. I felt that the talk was quite educational. I learnt about how our little actions can affect the environment on a large scale. It was very convincing and I felt like doing my part in conserving the environment.

The Jane Effect @ NTU (02 Feb)

NTU Earthlink invited Dr Jane Goodall, a famous primatologist and environmentalist from England, to give a public lecture in NTU on 02 Feb. The Lecture entitled “The Jane Effect” is held at Lecture Theatre 19 from 12.45 to 1.45pm.  

Dr Jane Goodall is well known for her 55 years study of social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees in Tanzania, Africa. She is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots and Shoots program. She has worked extensively to promote environmental conservation and animal welfare around the world.

At the age of 80, she still travels extensively to various countries to lecture on rainforest preservation, protecting the environment/ the animals on the planet. She is also a UN Messenger of Peace and a compassionate vegetarian.

Earth Society members attended “The Jane Effect” lecture on 02 Feb.

During the 1hour lecture, Dr Jane Goodall shared her life story. She spoke of her interest in animals and nature when she was young, her voyage to Africa, her study of Chimpanzees in Tanzania, her findings that animals (similar to humans) are capable of performing acts of love and violence. Dr Jane also shared on her Roots and Shoots program which empower young people around the world to take initiatives to protect the environment and the animals on the planet.

Dr Jane believes that “Every single one of us makes a difference every single day”, we can use our human intellect and indomitable human spirit to protect the environment and that we must act to change the world.

We left the lecture theatre feeling more inspired to carry on the environmental work that we are doing.

Assembly Talk @ Zhong Hua Primary (21 Jan)

Mr Peck Yong Xiang, teacher in charge of Green Club in Zhonghua Primary School, invited Earth Society to conduct an Assembly talk in the school on 21 Jan. This is the second year that Zhonghua Primary invited us to talk to their students.









On 21 Jan, Earth Society team reached Zhonghua Primary at 12.30 pm. We conducted an Environment talk for the school cohort from 12.45 to 1.15pm. The talk covered topics such as Overfishing, Deforestation, Climate change, and introduced some Environment Heros to the students. After the talk, we conducted a Quiz for the students. Students participated actively in the Quiz. We left the school at 1.30pm after the Assembly.





Mr Peck Yong Xiang helped us to compile some feedback from the students:
1. The talk was informative and it was relevant to their daily lives.
2. The videos were interesting and able to provide a better understanding of the presented content.

Assembly Talk @ Xishan Primary (19 Jan)

Ms Amanda Tan, HOD (science) in XiShan Primary, invited Earth Society to

conduct an Assembly talk in the school on 19 Jan.

On 19 Jan, Earth Society members reached XiShan Primary at 10.20 am. We set up and manned a booth at the school canteen from 10.30 to 11.20am. We conducted a Global Warming Assembly talk for the school cohort from 11.30 to 12pm. The students and teachers listened attentively to the talk.

We left the school after the talk.

Ms Amanda Tan provide the following feedback on the Assembly talk:

The presenter was able to use simpler language to talk about the issue of global warming. Students were astonished by the case studies brought up in the local context and this was a great talking point for raising their awareness of current affairs.

The videos though interesting could be better explained. The students need more visuals/animations of the cause effect relationships in unpacking Global warming.
